Monday afternoon I turned on the telly to eat my orange in the warm glow of entertainment, and Breakfast at Tiffany's (BAT) was on. I so love that movie. Audrey Hepburn is probably my absolute favourite actress of all time. So, I watched it until the end. So good!!
What surprised me when watching it was a revelation I had about another great girl TV thing, Sex and the City (SATC). My mother asked me the other day why Carrie Bradshaw smokes, and smokes so much/often, on the show. I didn't really have much of a reply except to say that obviously the writers threw into her character a bit of old fashioned New York femme stereotype (the sexy, single, intriguing smoking woman-girl). You know, they gotta give it to one of the ladies. But mum really wanted to know why it would be Carrie that smoked so much and not one of the other characters.
When I saw BAT, I knew what the deal was. Carrie, whether on purpose or by accident, is a modern equivalent of Holly Go Lightly (HGL). Everything from her fashion sense, her past and present as a party girl, her constant men changing, her inability to save money (or even manage it that well), her inability and utter lack of desire to cook, her love of coctails, the wild bird/frightened girl aspect of her character...Everything is so Audrey H. as Holly G.L.! I was so surprised that it didn't register before. I mean HGL is the original popcult single woman making her way through life in the Big Apple. A series like SATC would have to make a nod, but I always thought they did so in other ways, ie. Charlotte has some HGL moments, some Hepburn fashions, etc.

Anyhoo, I googled around to see what other critiques had to say on the subject and didn't get very much. I'm sure it's been done but I just though I'd through my 2 farthings into the pot.
Cheers to women everywhere! More on this later.
