Last of the Wintery Weather?

Gosh, do I hope that today would be the last of winter, but that wouldn't jive with most Ottawans who are now hell bent on breaking the snow accumulation record by the end of the month (the current one is from the 1930s, and we are now less than 30cm away from breakage - woohoo).

Since it snowed (and hailed) again today -I will add that it was supposed to RAIN- I decided to do a nice winter themed meal. I am like a fat kid on a smartie as far as cooking and baking are concerned, ever since I handed in my latest thesis draft. I expect to get it back in time for Easter. At Easter I will be baking and cooking come hell or high water (or in Ottawa, both!). I suppose I shouldn't speak of Hades some much around Easter. Oh well.

I went out shopping for food and supplies today in the snow-hail. Fun. More fun for me that the St. Patrick's day parade was going down Bank Street the same time I was. Wow. Painful. Not a big parade fan I.

Anyhoo, my mission was a success, and tonight I made a boeuf bourgignon inspired stew, with a green salad and my fave mustard lemon vinigrette on the side, and a nice loaf of potato sage sourdough bread from the Wild Oat.

For dessert, I made some pumpkin ginger cookies. They were sort of a combination of gingerbread and ginger snap. I tried them thin and thick - I think they are better thick: crisp on the outside & soft & moist on the inside. Yummy.

On a total side note, I was reading about some cooking related books yesterday, and my next purchase will be Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant. A collection of 26 essays about cooking and dinning alone. The authors include Haruki Murakami, Nora Ephron, and Laura Calder - and many other literary authors, food writers, and chefs. Cool, eh?

Tomorrow is guinness cupcake day, so stay tuned!
